- Abstract

Many important physiological activities in biological cells occur at membrane-water interfaces. Yet, it is not fully understood why the lipid-water boundary has been selected as the main site of biological regulation and signal transduction. Over the years, my laboratory has been interested in understanding the physicochemical principles that govern the biological processes at the lipid-water interfaces. In this lecture, I describe the basic principles of membrane-protein interactions and three different research episodes involving the proteins acting at the membrane-water interface, in which the understanding the basic principles of membrane-protein interactions leads to the elucidation of cellular signaling and regulation mechanisms and the development of a new strategy of drug design.

1. Introduction to biological membranes and membrane-protein interactions

2. Cellular regulation of eicosanoid-producing enzymes (phospholipase A2 and lipoxygenases) and development of novel anti-inflammatory drugs

3. Mechanism of protein kinase C activation

4. Membrane-targeting domains and four-dimensional proteomics studies of cellular protein targeting and regulation by two-photon microscopy.
